CBS cancels ‘after midnight’ while late night host Taylor Tomlinson returns to its first ‘passion’-in-up

CBS announced the cancellation of its late night comedy show “After Midnight” on Wednesday after the sudden decision of the host Taylor Tomlinson to return in full time to raised comedy.

Cancellation marks another obstacle for late night TV, a format increasingly challenged by financial pressures and changing viewers’ habits.

The network was previously engaged in a third season of “after midnight”, initially planned for September to May, but turned the decision when Tomlinson decided to leave. The last episode of the show will be broadcast in June.

Tomlinson, 31, said she intended to focus completely on the comedy raised, “her first passion”.

Its removal was unexpected, causing CBS leaders to reconsider their late night strategy.

Stephen Colbert, who served as an executive manufacturer of “after midnight” in addition to reception “The Late Show”, addressed Tomlinson’s decision with respect, saying: “While we were excited and grateful for our third season to start in the fall, we respect Taylor’s decision to return to full time.”

She gained national recognition through Netflix Specials and late night performances, leading to her host role in the now intact CBS show.

CBS movement effectively ends three decades of original 12:30 morning programming, a tradition that began in 1995 with “The late show” after the arrival of David Letterman from NBC.

Before creating original content at that hour, the network usually filled slot with repeating subform drama.

While traditional TV continues to lose the ground in transmission services, audience sizes and advertising income have fallen continuously.

Moreover, the transmission model has proven badly suitable for traditional late night formats, relying on current mood and numerous episodes.

Platforms like Netflix and Hulu have launched similar conversation style programs, just to interrupt almost all after short runs.

The late night contraction market has also reflected the change of attitudes between the armies. Instead of treating late night concerts as eternal appointments, many hoste now prioritize flexibility and various career opportunities.

Trevor Noah came out of “The Daily Show” voluntarily in 2022, citing the wishes to explore new ventures, while James Corden left “The Late Late Show” with similar ambitions.

Some former hoste have successfully moved into new formats.

Conan O’Brien, formerly with NBC and TBS, revived his career through Podcast, then winning the host role for this month’s Academy awards.

With the closing of “after midnight” and CBS by moving away from late night duration, the network seems less likely to review the format.

Instead, CBS can further faint in alternatives best associated with changing viewers’ models.

As night television late faces constant uncertainty, networks are increasingly reassessing the sustainability and future direction of an once mainstream genre.
