Megyn Kelly directed the charge in criticizing Tom Hanks for his participation in a controversial sketch “Saturday Night Live” in which he portrayed President Trump’s Maga supporters as “racist-racist.”
“Shame on her,” she told Hanks during Tuesday’s episode at Podcast Siriusxm “The Megyn Kelly Show”.
Former Fox News pronounced said Hanks Ski ski during the 50th anniversary of the Special show on Sunday was a betrayal of the audience itself that helped him make it a Hollywood icon.
“I’m sure Tom Hanks is worth a billion dollars,” Kelly said.
“And you know who got it for it? All of us … who went to see ‘Forrest Gump’, ‘Great’ and all Tom Hanks’s films and never thought he was judging them as stupid, rural racists, worth nothing. “
Kelly added that the hanks had carefully avoided divisive roles throughout his career, making his turn to “SNL” increasingly surprising.
“It was shocking to see someone who tries so carefully not to be too divisive in his choices to come out immediately and suggest that he thinks Trump’s supporters are racists. Shame on him.”
Hanks reproduced his role as Doug, a Maga supporting character from the repeated “Black Jeopardy” scheme.
Originally presented in 2016, Doug was a cartoon of a rural American, by Voting by Trump, who found unexpected terrain in common with black competitors in the appearance of imaginary games.
This time, the hanks once again donated a red magic hat, an American flag blouse and a thick southern attraction while interacting with the host Darnell Hayes, played by Kenan Thompson.
The sketch presented Eddie Murphy, Tracy Morgan and Leslie Jones as a competitor, before the hanks entered Murphy and hesitated to shake hands with Thompson – before finally giving up.
Portrait sparked immediate reactions, with many conservatives denouncing it as an outdated and offensive stereotype.
Journalist Matt Taibbi criticized the character as lazy and one-dimensional.
“This is an old Trop in the media and in the comedy. It is sophisticated urban getting into rural seeds,” he said.
“But you have to be accurate … The caricature must be true in a way, not just any stereotypes you have chosen by not observing people in real life. It’s not funny because it’s just a stereotype.”
Author Walter Kirn, who was Kelly’s guest in Podcast echoed the feeling.
“I didn’t know that Tom Hanks would go to this kind of thing,” said Kirn, who wrote “Up in Air”, which turned into a film featuring George Clooney.
“Writiteti terrible writing, it was a terrible scheme and he was the great loser. I see people all over the social media saying, “I don’t think I’ll look at it again anytime soon.” “
The reaction stretched beyond media critics, with Trump’s supporters accusing “SNL” of divisive propaganda.
Former Aid RFK Jr. Lauren called it a key example of why the show’s estimates are declining.
The post has requested comment from Hanks and “SNL”.
