On Wednesday, she finally admitted that she made a mistake in failing to cover the Hunter Biden laptop scandal immediately as the leftist broadcaster struggles to keep his federal funds.
Mea Culpa of NPR executive chief Katherine Maher came during the interrogation strong by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and other Republican lawmakers during a session of Congress subcommittees regarding the perceived prejudice of the broadcaster in its coverage.
“I want to say that NPR admits that we have been wrong in disrespecting the History History Hunter Biden more aggressively or faster,” Maher told the Committee.
GOP lawmakers and the Trump administration efficiency department tend to reduce federal funds for both NPR and PBS due to their left editorial trend.
Most funds for both organizations are distributed through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which was allocated $ 535 million for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
NPR takes less than 1% of its annual budget directly from federal government grants – although its member stations depend heavily on public funds.
While the largest NPR stations usually receive 10-15% of their budgets from the CPB, the smallest and rural stations can rely up to 30% or more, making indirect federal support essential for the overall NPR financing structure.
The PBS itself earns about 16% of its funds directly from federal sources, although most federal dollars go directly to local member stations, especially the smallest and rural exits that rely on these funds.
The rest of the PBA budget comes from private donations, corporate sponsorships and non -governmental funding resources.
Maher’s acceptance confirms the claims made by former NPR Berliner editor who left public funded last year and criticized his former chiefs for ignoring the exclusive post for Hunter Biden’s laptop before the 2020 elections.
Maher, who previously led Wikipedia and took on the leading role of NPR only last year, underwent a continuous question about her personal views and previous social media posts.
Among them was a tweet in which she labeled former President Trump a “racist” and “sociopath” during the 2020 presidential campaign.
Faced directly by rep. Tim burchett (r-ttenn.) In connection with her past comments, Maher admitted, “I’m sorry [them] today. ”
She further admitted that the NPR news team “has work to do” about securing the organization for balanced and reliable journalism.
The hearing included evidence from both MAHER and PBA PAULA KERGER CEO – though Maher was the main focus of Republican criticism.
GOP lawmakers occupied the late NPR response to covering discoveries about the now infamous laptop belonging to Hunter Biden and contained materials that raised serious questions about his international business activities.
“Our current editorial leadership thinks it was a mistake, like me,” Maher admitted, referring to the initial reluctance of NPR to investigate the matter.
The laptop in question, which was abandoned at John Paul Mac Isaac’s Delaware repair shop, contained emails that exhibit Hunter Biden’s relations in Ukraine and China while his father served as vice president.
Initial skepticism from NPR was obvious when the exit reported prematurely in March 2021 that US intelligence had discredited the laptop history – only to correct their claim later after realizing that intelligence officials had never made such a determination.
Only after the launch of a federal investigation and further certification of the laptop content, which revealed Hunter Biden’s lucrative links with foreign companies, began the comprehensive coverage.
The controversy was further intensified when Hunter Biden faced charges of crimes last year that eventually resulted in sentences. But he was spared in prison after President Joe Biden thanks to him and other family members shortly before he was out of office.
Greene expressed significant dissatisfaction during the hearing, sharply criticizing MAHE’s previous comments and questioning its suitability to oversee an organization that receives the taxpayer’s support.
“Let’s walk through some of your statements in order for the public to understand your personal views,” Grene said, pointing out Maher’s previous remarks that America was “dependent” on white superiority and critical comments about binary terminology.
Greene argued strongly that NPR should support neutrality given that it was partially funded by taxpayers. She also challenged MAHE’s personal ideology in contravention of the broadcaster’s mission.
