Lawyers are seeking answers to the efforts claimed by a high school in Texas to repeatly use a masculine name and masculine pronouns for a teenage teenage girl, despite objections from parents.
The lawyers sent a letter to Texas’s largest school circle after parents believed their daughter was secretly socializing at school.
Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a Conservative Legal Advocacy Group, sent a letter of request to Bellaire High School (BHS), which is part of the Houston Independent School District, on behalf of the student’s parents, seeking enrollments from the school in accordance with the Law of Open Enrollments.
In the fall of 2023, BHS employees began referring to a female student with a masculine name and masculine pronouns without the announcement or consent of her parents, claims letters ADF. Parents discovered in December 2023 when they discovered a masculine name in their daughter’s school work, in which they immediately told her teachers to stop using this name immediately.
In response, their daughters’ teachers told them that they would refer only to her legal name and female pronouns. But despite the initial teachers’ insurance, they discovered a few months later that school workers were using the male name and masculine pronouns, according to the letter.
Parents again asked high school workers, to stop, and they assured those who would be, but they are suspected of not yet.
In September 2024, the student’s parents met with Bellaire’s principal, Michael Niggli, where they asked for confirmation that school workers would refer only to their daughter with her given name and female pronouns, according to the letter.
But, says Adf, Niggli told them they should consider a “middle ground” solution about what it would be called in school.
Then, the parents followed in writing, emailing director Niggli to clearly state that HISD employees should only refer to their daughter with her given name and female pronouns.
He replied that “there will be no email with directives to call [your daughter] with a special name, ”according to the letter.
Principal Niggli is also reported to have told parents that a school adviser had communicated their instructions to teachers, but ADF claims that teachers have ignored similar guidance from them before, they are not sure that it is currently the case.
ADF is asking Hisd to assure the student’s parents that her employees are following their guidelines about their daughter.
They are also looking for documents regarding the use of the identity of HISD employees of preferred names or pronouns for students, including policy, practice, or guidance documents, training presentations and related documents. The deadline of paper, set by ADF, is Friday, March 21.
Vincent Wagner, an old counselor with the Center for Parents’ Rights in the Alliance defending freedom, told the Fox News Digital that if the answers are not given and the details are not clarified, this may result in legal action.
“If this is not what happens, then we have to consider what else is on the table and this can be a litigation,” he said. “It is still in the air what the next steps would be and it will depend on the specifics of the HISD response.”
The story drew attention after a representative for the parenting group group, Moms for Liberty, spoke at a meeting of the HISD School Board last month on behalf of the girl’s mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous.
“On the first day of the ninth grade, the teacher of my daughter’s theater sent home an information sheet to complete,” read mothers about Liberty representative last month in the name of the mother. “The second row of the sheet asked for her pronouns. Many teachers began to call her with a different name and pronouns. A teacher even went so far as to pass the legal name of my daughter she had written on her letter and write her chosen name in Red Ink.”
“This happened without our knowledge and of course without our consent. It goes against our Christian faith, its therapist’s advice and, with sincerity, ordinary sense. We met with its teachers, counselors and directors, no benefit. Hisd is intentionally and sequentially the passage of minors,” she added before her time was raised.
The public statement drew the attention of Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who said he instructed the Texas Education Agency (Tea) to open an investigation into the charges.
“No parent should endure this. Another reason why parents deserve school choice. No school should be included in” Transition “a child,” Abbott posted to X. “If this is not already illegal, it will be after that session.”
Wagner said the ADF and the student’s parents mainly require relevant documents that should be available under the Texas public information law, which parents are suspected to have presented repeatedly.
Fox News Digital arrived at the school circle for a comment request.
“A responsible document indicated that teachers were still referring to their daughter by the masculine name even after our clients met with the main Niggli,” reads ADF. “So to understand exactly what Hisd employees had done with their daughter, they sent a second request for public registration on January 3, 2025.”
“In response to this request, Hisd initially said that there were over 18,000 responsible documents,” the letters continued. “Then a month later, he replied that there was no responsible document and closed the request. Never gave a single document responsible to that second request” or even any explanation of the inconsistency. “
Wagner said that a failure from the HISD to agree with the Texas public information act can lead to litigation on what are the responsibilities of the school circle for parents.
“Given the pattern of existing failure and uncertainty, we ask HISD to immediately provide us and our clients that Hisd employees will refer to their daughter only with her given name and female pronouns,” the letter reads. “Please also send us copies of all sent correspondences that guide Hisd employees how they can turn to our client’s daughter.”
Wagner said ADF is also seeking clarification on HISD policy regarding students identifying the transgender, as well as any other instruction if there is no board policy.
“Which practices follow Hisd in these kinds of situations, and also how have teachers have trained to handle them?” he asked. “When you tell teachers a child is struggling with gender and there are questions, what are you telling teachers to do about it? What guidelines are given to teachers and other employees to address situations like these?”
Hisd serves over 189,000 students in 274 camps and is one of the largest employers in Houston, with about 27,000 employees, according to the HISD website.
