The Trump Administration has ordered four leftist news organizations, including the New York Times and NBC News to rest their dedicated Pentagon office space, making room for new media and Breitbart News supported by right and One America News News.
The decision was notified on Friday late in a Memorandum of the Defense Department issued by spokesman John Ullot, who wrote that The Times, NBC News, NPR and Politico should give up their Pentagon Office space until February 14th.
According to Ullyot, the mass is part of a new annual media rotation program designed to allow “a new outlet from the same medium that has not had the unique opportunity to report as a resident member of the Pentagon press corpus”.
As part of this reorganization, the post will replace time as a printed outlet, Oan will take the NBC News as a cable network, Breitbart News will take on the role of NPR as a radio and huffpost, owned by buzza, will take the politico space.
Huffpost does not use a correspondent covering the Pentagon, according to the news site.
The memory stressed that the affected news organizations will still have access to the Pentagon conferences and will remain members of the Pentagon press corpus, though they will lose their physical work space.
“Known as the correspondent correspondents, this office space is borrowed in the media by the Secretary of Defense stands as a tribute to the importance that the department has long decided to inform the public about the US military,” the memorandum reads.
The Trump administration has repeatedly expressed a desire to provide greater access to non -traditional media, including stores that have been favorable in their coverage of the president.
The Pentagon Press Association Board, an organization representing journalists covering military affairs, exploded the decision.
“We are very concerned about this unprecedented act by Dod to single out very professional media that have covered the Pentagon for decades, under Republican and democratic administrations,” the Board said in a statement.
“We have requested a meeting and will keep everyone informed.”
The announcement came just a week after Pete Hegseth, President Trump’s candidate for the Secretary of Defense, was closely confirmed. Critics argue that the decision is aimed at favoring conservative media.
Charlie Stadtlander, a spokesman for Times, condemned the move, calling it a “development about”.
“Times is committed to cover the Pentagon completely and with justice. The steps designed to prevent access is not clear in the public’s interest,” he said.
NPR Isabel Lara spokesman echoed those concerns, warning that the decision “interferes with the ability of millions of Americans to hear directly from Pentagon’s leadership”.
It urged Pentagon to expand the media office space to provide equal access to all news organizations.
Other affected exits expressed similar concerns.
Politico’s senior management editor Anita Kumar called the decision “disturbing”, while an NBC News spokesman expressed disappointment about the loss of a broadcasting stand that had been in use for decades.
Meanwhile, the entrance exits welcomed the decision.
A Post’s spokeswoman defended the move, saying that as a “broad media brand”, the post deserved a Pentagon presence.
Oan Charles Hering spokesman noted that the network “continues to seek similar access to other national television news media.”
Restoring the entry into the Pentagon Media marks another chapter in the strained Trump administration relationship with the press.
With allegations of pressing the press and concerns about assembling transparency in the media, the decision is likely to promote further debate on the role of independent journalism in government reporting.
