I’m a career coach – here’s how ChatGPT can be your secret weapon to getting a raise

A career coach revealed six ways to secure a pay rise in 2025 – and recommends using ChatGPT to prepare for deferment.

Melissa Stone, 43, an HR professional with more than 20 years of experience, is taking the lid off the tricks of the trade and showing how employees can follow six simple steps to get a raise.

She says workers should document a list of all their responsibilities and accomplishments to show how they contributed to the company’s success.

Melissa also believes that they should be prepared for pushback from senior management and give a ready answer if they are told “no” or if they are asked why they deserve it.

Melissa, an HR director and career coach from Ireland, said: “As an HR director who has discovered and approved thousands of salary increases over the years, I can confidently say that your knowledge of securing a salary increase well earned is everything.

“Remember as Tony Robbins says ‘you get what you tolerate in life.’

“And if you’re going to put up with less than you deserve, then that’s what you’re going to get.

“Self-advocacy is not only about money, but about justice and recognition.

“Don’t let yourself be a pushover.”

Melissa’s number one tip is to “know your market value.”

When going to a meeting for a raise, she suggests preparing a list of your strengths, skills, qualifications and accomplishments.

Melissa said: “Look at job boards and talk to recruitment consultants to find out what other companies have to offer for your experience and knowledge.

“The key here is to understand what you can gain in whatever role you’re able to do, not just the role you’re doing now.

“Your value is not based on your current job title.”

Melissa also points out that it’s important to document your value at work by listing all of your accomplishments.

“List all your responsibilities and achievements, and in particular understand how your role has evolved in the last 12 months,” she said.

“Be absolutely clear about how you contributed to the company’s success and why you are valuable to your business.”

Companies often set their annual budget well in advance, so Melissa says you shouldn’t waste a moment and get in there fast.

She also warns to prepare for delays and says that not all companies will be willing to give staff a pay rise.

Melissa said: “Use tools like ChatGPT to anticipate potential objections your manager might raise.

“Do this by simply going to ChatGPT and asking ‘I want a raise at work, why can my boss say no?’

“ChatGPT will instantly create reasons why your boss might reject you.

“Consider your responses to the excuses you may face that day.”

Melissa says employees should go into a raise meeting armed with all their preparation and knowledge in hand, and they should also understand how much they are willing to compromise with their boss.

Melissa said: “Armed with all your preparation and knowledge, understand how far you are willing to compromise.

“If your employer continues to balk at raising wages, ask for non-monetary benefits such as flexible work hours, additional vacation days or professional development opportunities.”

Melissa’s top tips for securing a raise:

  • Know your worth
  • Document your value at work
  • Plan the time
  • Prepare to be pushed
  • Negotiate smartly
  • Mindset matters
