The New York Times editorial board was down on President-elect Donald Trump’s landslide victory, declaring his return to power a “serious threat” to the republic.
“American voters have made the choice to return Donald Trump to the White House, setting the nation on an uncertain course that no one can fully predict,” the board wrote Wednesday, adding later, “Mr. The election of Trump poses a great threat to [the] republic, but he will not determine the long-term fate of American democracy. This outcome rests in the hands of the American people.”
Trump capped a remarkable political comeback from his 2020 loss and impeachment over the Jan. 6 Capitol riots with an emphatic victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
Winning back swing states like Pennsylvania, Georgia and Wisconsin, and making big gains in blue states, Trump was declared the winner by the media early Wednesday and vowed to usher in a “golden age” for the United States.
The New York Times is not among those enthusiastic about Trump’s victory.
“Over the next four years, Americans must keep a clear eye on the threat to the nation and its laws coming from its 47th president and be prepared to exercise their rights in defense of the country and the people, laws, institutions and values. that have kept him strong,” the Times wrote.
He added that all Americans should be “wary” of the next administration and called Trump “transparently motivated only by the pursuit of power and the preservation of the cult of personality he has built around himself.”
The Times went on to express concerns about his foreign policy leadership, his vow to punish his enemies and his surrounding himself with “enablers prepared to pledge allegiance to him”.

He advised Democrats to do some soul-searching about why they lost the election and said they waited too long to realize that President Biden was unable to seek another term.
The Times was among the media organizations that called on him to withdraw after his weak debate against Trump in June; under great pressure, Biden dropped out as the Democratic nominee and endorsed Harris on July 21, setting off a frenetic race at the end of the campaign.
Unlike other legacy newspapers that skipped endorsements this cycle, such as the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, the New York Times made its mark clearly in September.
In endorsing Harris, she called him the only patriotic choice and said Trump was clearly unfit for office.
Still, it wasn’t shocking for the Times to endorse a Democratic candidate: This was the 17th consecutive presidential election it had done so.
